Lauki or Bottle gourd can vary in size from short and round, uniformly cylindrical, curved, bulbous, or extremely long and thin. Its skin is most often smooth. Its coloring can vary from a light green or chartreuse to dark green. The interior flesh is creamy white with petite seeds that when young are tender and edible. Bottle gourd squash offers a mild flavor reminiscent of summer squash and cucumber with a firm texture. 
Bottle gourd is rich in fiber and essential minerals, iron and protein. Fibre helps in preventing constipation and other digestive disorders. Use in juiced form to treat stomach acidity, indigestion and ulcers. · Since it is low in calories, bottle gourd can be used in low calorie diets. 

·       Also called bottle squash and calabash gourd, the bottle gourd is a well-traveled vegetable. And they can survive in salt water for more than 6 months.

·       Bottle gourds probably originated in Africa, but there are remains in Peru dating to 10,000 B.C. Remains have been found in Egypt, India, New Zealand, Mexico, Indonesia, China, and Florida. It probably floated on the seas in its long travels.
