In the 1870’s, a shipment of young
citrus trees arrived unnamed to an orchard. The orange variety went nameless
for years, until a visiting citrus grower from Spain ended the mystery when he
saw them and remarked, “Aha! The late orange of Valencia.” Thus, naming it
Valencia oranges are the only type of
orange available in the summer – It's true! Because of the type of climate that
the Valencia needs to grow it is only grown and harvested from March through
July each year.
