The chestnuts are the deciduous trees and shrubs in the genus Castanea, in the beech family Fagaceae. They are native to temperature regions of the Northern Hemisphere.

Chestnuts depart from the norm for culinary nuts,as they have little protein or fat; their calories come chiefly from carbohydrates. Chestnuts contain very little fat, and that being mostly unsaturated, and no gluten.
